Hi! I’m Katie! Here is my story
Katie’s journey into the world of alternative medicine started in 2002 when her digestive issues began. She was seeking help outside of the western model because, despite having a deep respect for many aspects of it, an overuse of antibiotics was largely to blame for her declining health. She had her first acupuncture treatment that year from a Naturopath, was fascinated, and continued receiving acupuncture on and off over the years.
Katie dreamed of becoming an acupuncturist but it wasn’t until she committed to bimonthly treatments along with taking Chinese herbal formulas regularly that she began to seriously consider it. Around the same time she started learning other energy work modalities, mostly for herself, but never lost her fascination with acupuncture and Chinese herbalism. Fifteen years after her initial encounter with it and after 10 years of consideration, she finally decided to pursue the study of East Asian Medicine.
Aside from the needles she loves incorporating moxibustion, cupping, guasha, teishin, reiki and essential oils into treatments as well as various types of bodywork including myofascial release, visceral manipulation, craniosacral therapy, shiatsu and almost
always tuning forks. She has more recently begun learning Fascial Counterstrain and also prescribes Chinese herbal formulas.
Katie is a lover of cinema and is also a projectionist at a couple of
theaters around town and enjoys spending her free time watching movies, reading, playing music, or out in nature with her partner and friends or at home with their 2 cats.
Katie holds a BFA in Photography, a Masters of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine from the Classical Chinese Medicine program at the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in Portland.
Professional Experience
Throughout her career, Katie has provided hundreds of treatments in Portland, Oregon as a practitioner in private practice, as a volunteer for underserved communities, and as an intern at the NUNM Health Centers.
In addition to her private practice, Katie currently has the great privilege to serve patients at:
Cascadia Garlington Health Center - The Garlington Center combines affordable housing with a community wellness center as well as behavioral health and primary healthcare services. The center is named for the Reverend Dr. John W. Garlington Jr. Before their sudden passing in 1986, Rev. Garlington and his wife Yvonne were prominent members of the Portland community. Their life-long service and commitment to African American families and community members resonates today in the mission of the Garlington Center. The Garlington Center offers a revolutionary approach to healthcare and wellness, creating partnerships across several key public service agencies and providing healing, homes and hope to members of our community who need it most.
