Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to our FAQ page!
Whether you're new to acupuncture or a returning patient, we want you to feel informed and confident in your care.
Booking & Office Policies
Do I need to verify my insurance before booking?
Yes. We require that all patients verify their insurance benefits before booking to determine if your treatment will be covered. This must be done prior to the 24-hour cancellation window to avoid incurring fees related to non-coverage or unmet deductibles.
What is your cancellation policy?
We have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy. No Shows & Cancellations made less than 24 hours before your appointment will incur a cancellation fee. This policy applies to all patients regardless of insurance coverage.
Why do I need a credit card on file?
A credit card is required to book appointments and will be securely stored on file. It is only charged in the event of a late cancellation or no-show, or to pay any outstanding balance after insurance processing.
Why do I see a $1 charge on my account after booking?
This is a temporary authorization hold placed by our credit card processor to verify your card at the time of booking. It is not an actual charge and no funds were withdrawn. These holds typically disappear within 3–5 business days (up to 10 depending on your bank). If you’d like confirmation, your bank can verify that no payment was processed.
Can I book online with Oregon Health Plan (OHP)?
Only if you are covered under an OHP plan that we accept: Legacy Pacific Source, OHSU Health, Pacific Source Community Solutions, Yamhill CCO, Providence Health Assurance, or OHP Open Card.
We do not accept OHP plans managed by Kaiser, CareOregon, or Trillium. Please do not book online if your plan is managed by one of these CCOs unless you plan to pay out of pocket.
Do you treat veterans?
Yes! To receive care, the VA must issue a referral to Silver Lining Acupuncture as your preferred provider. Once we receive authorization from TriWest, we’ll contact you to schedule (if the VA Community Care Network hasn’t done so already).
What if I was injured in an accident?
We accept Worker’s Compensation, MVA, bicycle accidents, and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) claims. Please provide your claim number, adjustor’s contact information, and a doctor’s referral (if applicable). In Oregon, drivers are required to carry $15,000 in medical coverage—this applies regardless of fault.
Do you provide financial assistance?
We offer a discounted time-of-service rate to patients who pay in full at the time of service. Additionally, a 25% discount off our time-of-service rate is available to Kaiser ChooseHealthy members and patients who submit a financial assistance application.
Do you provide superbills for out-of-network insurance?
No. We do not issue superbills for self-submission to out-of-network insurers.
Modalities We Offer
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a gentle, time-tested therapy that uses fine, sterile needles to stimulate the body’s natural healing response and restore balance.
Moxibustion (Moxa)
Moxa is a warming therapy using the herb mugwort. It improves circulation, relieves cold and damp conditions, and boosts immunity.
Fire Cupping
Cupping creates suction on the skin to loosen tight muscles, stimulate lymphatic drainage, and promote detoxification.
Tuning Sound Fork Therapy
Sound vibrations from tuning forks are applied to acupuncture points to support nervous system balance and emotional wellbeing.
Myofascial Release
This hands-on technique targets connective tissue to release restrictions, improve posture, and reduce chronic pain or tension.
Craniosacral Therapy
A gentle, non-invasive therapy that helps harmonize the rhythm of cerebrospinal fluid and calm the nervous system. Helpful for headaches, TMJ, and trauma recovery.
Aromatherapy
*Please note: not all practitioners provide all services.
Treatment Questions
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body to promote the free flow of energy (Qi), reduce inflammation, and restore internal balance.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. Acupuncture is extremely safe when performed by a licensed professional. We use sterile, single-use needles, and follow all safety and sanitation guidelines.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Rarely. The needles are hair-thin and often painless. Many patients find treatments deeply relaxing and even fall asleep.
Where are the needles placed?
Common areas include the arms, legs, back, abdomen, head and ears—based on your condition.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Your practitioner will review your health history, evaluate your condition, and perform your first treatment. Expect your first session to last 75–90 minutes. Follow-ups are approximately 60 minutes.
Can I receive acupuncture while pregnant?
Yes! Acupuncture is safe during pregnancy and beneficial for morning sickness, back pain, fatigue, and more. Please inform your practitioner if you are pregnant.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Eat a light meal or snack beforehand. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Drink plenty of water after your session.
Are there side effects from acupuncture?
Side effects are rare but may include mild bruising or lightheadedness. Most patients experience only positive effects.
Can I book a bodywork only session?
Yes! Katie offers a deeply restorative session combining the gentle precision of craniosacral therapy, the vibrational healing of tuning forks, and the subtle unwinding of myofascial release. Each treatment is guided by energy work and intuitive exploration of the fascia and tissues, inviting the body to release tension and restore balance from the inside out. Sessions may also include gua sha or cupping when beneficial. This is not a deep tissue massage—instead, it works on a more refined, subtle level, encouraging profound shifts without force.
What should I expect during a cupping session?
Cupping is deeply relaxing for both body and mind. The cups create a gentle suction on the skin—similar to the sensation of a massage, but instead of pressing down, the cups lift the tissue upward. This pulling sensation can feel soothing and calming. Cups may be placed in one spot to create a focused effect, or they might be moved along the muscles with oil for a more dynamic treatment.
Are there any side effects from cupping?
Cupping is generally very safe and well-tolerated. Most people feel relaxed, looser, and refreshed after a session. However, some may feel tired, achy, or mildly sore the next day—similar to how you might feel after a deep massage. The most common visible side effect of cupping is round marks on the skin, ranging from pink to deep purple. If you have an upcoming event or photoshoot and want to avoid marks, it's best to schedule your session for another time.
When Should Cupping Be Avoided?
Cupping is not recommended for children under 4 years old or for older adults with very delicate or fragile skin. It should also be avoided if you are taking blood-thinning medications. Do not receive cupping over areas with a sunburn, rash, open wound, skin ulcer, or a fresh tattoo.
Billing & Payment
Do you accept health insurance?
Yes. We are in-network with many major plans and some OHP plans. Please contact us or check your benefits before booking. You will be responsible for any co-pays, deductibles, or uncovered services.
Do you offer cash-pay options?
Yes. We offer a base rate for acupuncture-only sessions. You may choose to add additional bodywork modalities (like cupping, gua sha, or myofascial release) for a personalized and enhanced experience, at an additional fee.
Do I need a referral?
Some insurance plans require a referral for acupuncture. If unsure, please check with your insurer or send us your insurance details so we can help verify.
Is bodywork such as cupping, gua sha, or myofascial release covered by insurance?
Sometimes! These therapies may be covered under your plan’s physical therapy benefit. If not, you can still add them to your acupuncture visit or book them as a separate session at our discounted self-pay rate. We’ll happily check your benefits so you know what’s covered before you begin.
Do I need pre-authorization?
It depends on your plan. Some insurers cover acupuncture and certain bodywork modalities (like cupping, gua sha, or myofascial release) only when prior authorization is approved. Pre-authorization means your insurance company must review and approve treatment before visits are covered.
OHP (Oregon Health Plan): Covers some conditions without prior auth (e.g., spinal pain), but requires authorization for others (e.g., headaches or other non-spinal pain conditions).
Commercial plans: Policies vary widely. Some require an auth request for all acupuncture visits; others only after a certain number of sessions.
If auth is needed: We’ll collect the required paperwork and submit it on your behalf. The process typically takes 7–14 business days.
If not covered: You can still receive treatment on a self-pay basis at our discounted rate.
